Can Turnitin Recognize AI?

The artificial intelligence (AI) revolution has significantly changed the scope of academic writing with AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude AI offering advanced writing solutions. However, as this technology grows, so too do the tools used to detect AI writing, which could be a problem for those considering using such tools to complete academic assignments.

Turnitin, a software program responsible for checking academic work for plagiarism, is one such detector capable of identifying work produced by AI tools. The software employs a massive database of online content, academic papers, and previously submitted student work for comparison, ensuring the originality of each submitted task. However, since the rise of AI writing tools, there have been questions as to whether Turnitin can effectively detect AI-produced content.

Turnitin claims its software is highly capable in this regard. For example, between April and October 2023, they processed over 130 million papers for AI detection, with 3.5 million flagged as having 80% or more AI-generated content. Although impressive, the effectiveness and reliability of this detection remain debatable.

Some institutes, like Vanderbilt University in the US, have disabled the feature due to its unreliability. Turnitin admits there is a 1% error rate, which may lead to false negatives—hundreds of students potentially accused of cheating incorrectly. Furthermore, studies have also shown that AI detectors, including Turnitin, are biased against non-native English writers, often misclassifying their work as AI-generated.

Despite these concerns, Turnitin still has a high adoption rate across universities globally, as AI-produced submissions remain an issue demanding attention. It is crucial, therefore, for students intending to use AI tools for assignments to be informed about the risk of detection.

Despite possible inaccuracies in their detection process, including occasional false positives, Turnitin and similar tools are still widely used. Therefore, students must be aware of the possible repercussions of getting flagged even if some inaccuracies persist.

The use of AI increases, so too will the nature of these debates and the need for effective, reliable detection mechanisms – a modern cat-and-mouse chase in the realms of academia. It’s a challenging dichotomy to navigate—for students and educational institutions alike.
