CFOtech Australia – IWD 2024: Working towards reducing the gender disparity for women entrepreneurs in technology.

Tech start-ups often arise from dynamic ideas generated by innovative minds, particularly college graduates who have identified a gap in the market that demands a tech solution. A majority of these businesses commence as bootstrapped operations; others, on the other hand, are based on singular provisional ideas with potential for growth.

In 2022, the author attended a pitch wherein a man discussed the potential of ChatGPT to a gathering of 30 or more investors. Explaining the AI’s capacity to write, design, and reimagine, the speaker sought to raise $20 million to develop solutions that complemented ChatGPT and employed the GPT-3, the most advanced version at that time. The audience seemed excited and intrigued by the possibilities of this proposed project.

A few days later, the author contacted one of the event organisers to inquire about the outcome of the fundraising effort. The answer was less than desirable. The organisers had only managed to raise a sum of US$12 million, falling short of the target. However, they admitted to still being in the process of follow-up funding attempts, signaling that despite the initial shortfall there was still a chance to reach the desired investment.

The post then alludes to another article about the International Women’s Day 2024 that discussed efforts to bridge the gender gap for female tech founders. This is indicative of the broader context and conversations within the Australian tech startup scene and foregrounds the continuous fight for inclusivity and equality in the sector.

In conclusion, the inception of tech startups usually depends on identifying a unique market gap. While most of these startups begin with bootstrapping, some are based around powerful ideas that can attract substantial investments. Despite this, even promising projects like the GPT-3-based solution may face funding hurdles, demonstrating that the journey to securing venture capital is often challenging and unpredictable. Nonetheless, these startups stand as testimonies of ongoing innovation within the burgeoning Australian tech start-up scene.
