OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, has seen an incredible increase in users since its launch in November 2022. In just five days, one million people were using it and by January the following year, it had a hundred million active users- a 9900% rise! This skyrocketed to 173 million users by April 2023 and 1.5 billion monthly visits by January 2024. The United States and India are at the forefront, with 14.4% and 6.9% respectively of their populations using ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has revolutionized the artificial intelligence chatbot market by surpassing Character.AI in terms of user count. It recorded quick user growth by amassing one million users within just five days post-launch. However, it saw a decline in average site visit duration from 8.7 minutes in March 2023 to around 7 minutes by August 2023.
ChatGPT, accessible in 82% of the world’s countries, becomes instantly popular amongst millennials, particularly in the United States and India. It earned OpenAI an impressive $80 million each month, contributing to revenue projections of $1 billion for 2024. Furthermore, the ChatGPT Android application has over 10 million downloads and an average rating of 4.7/5.
On the downside, ChatGPT’s booming success has sparked concerns on potential job disruptions. A Goldman Sachs report indicates 300 million full-time jobs could be affected by technologies such as ChatGPT. The impact is expected to be uneven across different job types, with complete replacement possible for up to 7% of jobs, and an integration capacity for 63%. Nevertheless, many also view chatbots like ChatGPT as tools that could increase productivity and help bridge skill gaps.
