MIT seniors Gosha Geogdzhayev and Sadhana Lolla have achieved the distinguished Gates Cambridge Scholarship, granting them the chance to undertake postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge in the UK. Gates Cambridge Scholarships were founded in 2000, with the aim to develop a worldwide network of future leaders committed to improving lives globally.
Gosha Geogdzhayev, originally from New York City, majors in physics with mathematics and computer science minors. During his time at Cambridge, he plans to follow an MPhil in quantitative climate and environmental science, targeting the application of these areas to climate science. His ultimate goal is a career focused on inventing pioneering statistical methods for climate prediction. At MIT, Geogdzhayev is studying climate emulators and is working on a climate extremes projection emulator. Enjoying a considerable reputation in the field of earth and atmospheric sciences, Geogdzhayev has obtained several awards. Besides his research life, he is keen on writing poetry and has also taken on a council position in his residential college.
Sadhana Lolla from Clarksburg, Maryland, is a computer science major with minors in mathematics and literature. As part of her scholarship, she will follow an MPhil in technology policy at Cambridge. Lolla is determined to advocate for and create technology that can benefit marginalized communities, such as her family’s home village in rural India. This objective aligns with her ongoing research in embodied intelligence. At MIT, Lolla is involved in research on secure and trustworthy robotics and deep learning. She has been active in forming debiasing strategies for autonomous vehicles and speeding up the robotic design process. Moreover, Lolla’s endeavors have included creating an uncertainty-aware system for deep learning.
Along with her research activities, Lolla is dedicated to global accessibility in computer science education. She works as a lecturer on a major AI class at MIT, helping educate millions of students worldwide. She heads the curriculum for Momentum AI, an exclusive American system that offers free AI education to underserved students. Beyond academics, Lolla was the managing director for xFair, MIT’s largest student-led careers fair. In her leisure time, she enjoys singing, tackling crossword puzzles, and baking.
