Harvard scholars introduce ReXrank: A publicly accessible ranking system for AI-based creation of radiology reports from chest X-ray pictures.

Harvard researchers have won the medical AI field’s attention with their launch of ReXrank, an open-source leaderboard promoting the advancement of AI-driven radiology report generation, particularly in chest X-ray imaging. This unveiling implicates changes in healthcare AI and is designed to bring a transparent and full-picture evaluation framework.

ReXrank makes use of a variety of datasets such as MIMIC-CXR, IU-Xray, and CheXpert Plus, ensuring the sustainability and adaptability of the benchmarking system. Researchers, consultants, and AI enthusiasts are invited to test and submit their models, spurring competition and collaboration in the field that could shape future patient care and medical workflow.

Under the ReXrank system, evaluation guidelines are comprehensible and transparent. There is an evaluation script accessible to researchers on the GitHub repository, with which they can readily test their models and submit the results. In ensuring all contributions are evaluated consistently and fairly, ReXrank propels innovations in the complex world of medical imaging.

One dataset used by ReXrank is the MIMIC-CXR dataset, consisting of over 377,000 images attributed to over 227,000 radiographic studies taken at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The offered models utilize the dataset to produce precise, clinically relevant radiology reports that can be ranked based on different metrics.

IU X-ray dataset includes a total of 7,470 radiography reports alongside chest X-ray images from Indiana University. The leaderboard for this dataset ranks models depending on their performance, recognizing the potential in models like MedVersa, RGRG, and RadFM in generating accurate medical reports.

CheXpert Plus, another dataset utilized, encompasses 223,228 unique pairs of radiology reports and chest X-rays from over 64,000 patients. It is used in conjunction with ReXrank to recognize and highlight models based on their performance.

Researchers eagerly wishing to feature on ReXrank are encouraged to develop, evaluate and submit their models. Clear instructions and tutorials are available on the ReXrank GitHub repository to streamline the submission, ensuring researchers can efficiently submit their predictions for scoring.
