A new dimension of privacy invasion has emerged with the proliferation of AI “nudify” apps, following the AI boom in Silicon Valley. These AI-powered applications strip the clothes off individuals in photographs, mostly women. The creation of non-consensual explicit content using these apps has attracted millions of online users.
A platform where these “nudify” apps continue to proliferate is the Telegram, where several bots are offering undressing services. A quick search of terms related to ‘undress’, ‘deepfake’, or ‘nudify’ yields multiple chat groups and bots providing these services. One operation working in the space is a group named “Undress.app”, linked to the website Undress AI. With more than 174,000 subscribers, newcomers are lured in with free trials to test the service.
Upon joining, the users are redirected to “Undress AI Bot,” which claims to remove unwanted clothes from images. Users are given five free credits along with guidance about the photos that would yield the best results.
A more sophisticated bot in operation is “Undresser Ai”, subscribed by over 2,600 users. This bot provides users with far more customization options, including the age, ethnicity, breast size, and the photo angle of the output image. More skilled users can write detailed prompts to generate the ideal AI-created nude image.
These bots are focusing on the creation of explicit images of women, deploying AI-powered deepfakes to generate non-consensual explicit content. The bots incentivize their services by providing free credits to those who bring in new members, similar to pyramid referral schemes.
However, these “nudify” bots only represent a fraction of AI deepfakes found online. Women are common targets of these AI-generated schemes, who are often victimized without their consent or knowledge. In Tasmania, a man was recently imprisoned for owning AI-created child abuse material marking the first police crackdown of such nature in the state.
Despite being extensively criticized for promoting non-consensual nudity, these bots continue to exist on Telegram. These platforms not only violate individual rights but expose the gross misuse of AI in invading privacy through this harmful form of deepfakes.
