Here are some examples of AI deep fake incidents that created waves in the political world recently:
In January 2024, a robocall mimicking Joe Biden’s voice emerged in New Hampshire, US, falsely urging voters to wait for the November election, inaccurately suggesting that participating in the primary would favor Donald Trump. This move, considered an illegal attempt to disrupt the presidential primary and suppress voter turnout, was traced back to a former state Democratic Party chair’s personal cellphone number. The voice manipulation was reportedly achieved using ElevenLabs, a leader in speech synthesis, which later suspended the offender.
In November 2023, an AI deep fake video misleadingly showed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz endorsing a ban on the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The video was part of a campaign run by the Center for Political Beauty (CPB), an art-activism group known to address significant contemporary issues artistically.
In January 2024, UK research revealed that over 100 deceiving video ads featuring Prime Minister Rishi Sunak were circulating on Facebook. Originating from various countries and promoting fraudulent investment schemes, these ads reached an estimated 400,000 individuals.
