Item#38 – Virtual Reality, Casual Conversations, and Irremediable Deceptions of ChatGPT

This week’s AI news roundup includes stories about advancements in AI and VR leading to increased user isolation, OpenAI’s struggle with keeping its models truthful, key businesses poaching AI talent from rival companies, and the potential risks AI poses to scientific integrity.

Increasingly, users are leveraging advanced AI and VR technologies to craft their personalized virtual realities, ironically leading to more isolation in a world that’s more connected than ever. On a different note, OpenAI is under fire from privacy advocacy group, noyb, who have sued the company claiming that its ChatGPT tool generates false information about users. The company admitted that their models aren’t totally honest currently and ensuring complete honesty remains a work in progress.

Simultaneously, tech giants such as Apple and Microsoft continue to recruit and invest in talented AI professionals to enhance their offerings. Apple, for instance, has been scouting talent from Google, setting them up in a secret lab in Zurich. Microsoft also made a significant move taking on most of Inflection’s engineers and its CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, earlier this year. Suleyman is rumoured to be overseeing the development of a large-scale AI model for Microsoft known as the MAI-1.

A Princeton-led team warns that the automation of processes through AI may threaten the integrity of scientific research. AI-enabled research is difficult to validate, undermining its credibility. The “Dead Internet” theory has also come to light suggesting that the internet is majorly dominated by AI bots, with the human contribution reducing steadily.

AI advancements are also affecting weapon technology. However, the potential of AI-powered fighter jets, for instance, is concerning given issues with untruthful AI remain unresolved.

The roundup has also included a series of engaging discussions with key personalities in the AI and blockchain fields, who are part of exciting developments in these industries.

The report finishes by highlighting AI events taking place globally, such as the Middle East Banking AI & Analytics Summit 2024 in Saudi Arabia, and the second annual DataConnect Conference West in Oregon. Finally, a list of other interesting AI news like Microsoft collaborating with Sanctuary AI for robot research, and OpenAI developing new AI image detection and audio watermarking tools, is provided.
