ITEM#38 – Virtual Reality, Indiscreet Conversations, and Irremediable Falsehoods from ChatGPT

The rise of AI and VR is making people more isolated despite making the world more connected, according to the Daily AI news round-up. OpenAI has said that it cannot stop its chatbot ChatGPT from creating false information. The group maintains its privacy stance on “fair use,” but plans to develop a “Media Manager” platform for creators to have more control over their content.

Apple is adopting an aggressive AI strategy by attracting AI talent from companies like Google. They have established a secret AI lab in Zurich, while Microsoft also did an AI talent grab earlier this year, recruiting many of Inflection’s engineers and its CEO for a massive project.

AI is automating many processes, but a Princeton-led team warns of risks to scientific integrity, citing concerns about the replicability of ML-driven research. This echoes a theory that the majority of web activity is AI-generated, seeing half the web traffic accounted by AI bots.

Concerns have grown over automating weapons of war using AI, illustrated by the demonstration of an AI-piloted F16 fighter jet by the US Air Force.

In the AI and blockchain space, Eugene spoke with Cinderella Amar, the founder of Glass Ventures VC fund, and Chad Sanderson, CEO and founder of Gable.ai, discussing the future of AI and the importance of data management.

Various AI-themed industry events took place this week including the 8th Middle East Banking AI & Analytics Summit 2024 in Saudi Arabia, the second annual DataConnect Conference West focused on women’s contributions to AI and machine learning.

Among other AI news, Microsoft has partnered with Sanctuary AI for general-purpose robot research, OpenAI is developing new AI image detection and audio watermarking tools, and some experts suggesting AI’s potential in making war more humane.
