A recent study by Canva and Sago, experts in design tools and quantitative research respectively, has found that almost half of job applicants utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their resumes. The study gathered data from 5,000 hiring managers and job seekers in regions including the US, UK, India, Germany, Spain, France, Mexico, and Brazil. It was discovered that not only do 45% of job seekers use AI to help create their resumes, but 90% of hiring managers find it acceptable for applicants to do so.
The study indicates a transition away from traditional text resumes as 71% predict the obsolescence of the conventional CV in the near future. AI is praised for making the job-seeking process easier, especially for non-native English speakers who can use AI to improve their written communication skills. However, there are also criticisms as the best AI models can be expensive and cause other issues such as discrimination and bias in automated resume-scanning tools.
Additional research by Emma van Inwegen, a candidate for a Ph.D. at MIT Sloan, and her colleagues in 2023, found that applicants who use AI tools for writing assistance, such as Grammarly, received 7.8% more job offers and earned higher wages. They discovered that better-written resumes, especially when it comes to spelling accuracy, resulted in a higher likelihood of securing employment. The research also discovered that employers didn’t mind, and sometimes preferred, the use of descriptive language in resumes.
In conclusion, AI can be utilized beneficially by job seekers, especially for non-English speakers, to improve their resumes and increase their chances of securing employment. Despite some criticisms, AI is generally supported and encouraged by hiring managers.
