Recent advancements in the field of robotic reinforcement learning (RL) have led to significant progress. These advancements include the development of new methods that can manage complex image observations, training in real-world scenarios, and incorporation of auxiliary data such as demonstrations and previous experiences. However, the practical application of robotic RL still poses challenges as the particularities of the algorithms’ implementation can be as critical, if not more, as the choice of the algorithm itself.
A solution to this was offered with the creation of a library incorporating a sample-efficient off-policy deep RL method, tools for reward computation, environment resetting, a high-quality controller for a popularly used robot, among other resources. Introduced as SERL, this library represents a significant stride in making robotic reinforcement learning more accessible, highlighting its design decisions and impressive experimental results.
The SERL library has shown its ability to accomplish efficient learning and achieve policies for tasks such as PCB board assembly, cable routing, and object relocation. It notably requires an average training time of just 25 to 50 minutes per policy. This performance represents an upgrade from previous results reported for similar tasks.
Moreover, the policies refined from the SERL tool exhibit exceptional success rates, robustness under external variables, and spontaneous recovery and correction behaviors. The unveiling of this open-source application is hoped to foster further progress in robotic RL by serving as a resourceful tool for the robotics community.
