Small Giants Prevail: The Unexpected Effectiveness of Compact LLMs Revealed!

In the rapidly evolving world of natural language processing (NLP), the advent of large language models (LLMs) has made remarkable strides. However, their application in real-world scenarios is often curtailed by the vast computational resources they require. This has prompted researchers to examine the feasibility of smaller, resource-efficient LLMs in tasks like meeting summarization.

Traditionally, text summarization models required hefty annotated datasets and significant computational power. While these models yielded stunning results, their practical implementation was restricted due to high operational costs. Acknowledging this issue, a recent study tested whether smaller LLMs could perform as well as their heftier counterparts. The study compared models such as FLAN-T5, TinyLLaMA, and LiteLLaMA with larger LLMs. The smaller models were specifically trained on certain datasets, and the larger ones were tested in a zero-shot fashion, without specific task training.

The investigation found that some compact LLMs, particularly FLAN-T5, exhibited on par or superior performance to larger LLMs in summarization tasks. The results suggest that compact LLMs could offer a cost-effective option for NLP applications.

Notably, FLAN-T5 distinguished itself in meeting summarization. It equaled or surpassed many larger LLMs, affirming its efficiency. This highlights the possibility that compact models could change the way we deploy NLP solutions, especially where computational resources are scarce.
