Spotify recently introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) playlist art feature, making it the latest entrant in the AI art industry. The feature allows users to develop custom AI-generated artwork matching the ‘vibe’ of their playlists. The process is conducted on Spotify’s iOS mobile app, translated for all users to see on a desktop via Spotify’s AI Playlist Art webpage, accessed under the ‘Picked for you’ section.
Upon selection, the app guides the user to a page introducing the feature. By clicking on ‘Start creating’, users can begin crafting their art. Only artwork for self-made playlists can be generated limiting users from making artwork for playlists they follow, those by artists, or those recommended by Spotify’s algorithm.
Three playlists were tested for the new feature. The first, titled ‘One Last Summer Party With Justin’, comprised 50 R&B, Rap, and Hip-Hop songs from artists like JAY Z, Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, and Usher. Upon selecting ‘Create art’, AI begins crafting the artwork – a process that lasts for a few minutes. Once finalized, users unsatisfied with the final output can repeat the process using the ‘repeat’ arrow button.
Another playlist titled ‘Augustus Waters’ was tested. This was an acoustic/ballads playlist featuring songs from Ed Sheeran, Troye Sivan, and Regina Spektor. Spotify’s AI created three impressive pieces of art for this playlist.
In conclusion, Spotify’s ‘AI Playlist Art’ is an inventive feature, adding a new dimension to the app whilst enhancing user-art interaction. Spotify hasn’t commented on whether this is a permanent or temporary feature, indicating an opportunity for users to capitalize on this innovative tool before it potentially disappears.
