Technical Leadership Attributes

Leadership within the tech industry is important and organizations thrive when they have loyal, devoted team members and customers, and an inspiring person to lead them. Several qualities are considered to be common among leaders such as vision, energy, authority, and strategic direction. However, an inspirational leader goes beyond these basic qualities and is someone who others genuinely want to follow.

Inspirational leaders are seen to reveal their weaknesses, proving they are human and not afraid to show this aspect of their personality, which helps to build trust and collaboration. They have sharp intuition, sensing subtle changes in attitudes and situations, which helps them anticipate problems or opportunities. They practice tough empathy, considering not just what their team wants but what they need, and knowing when to step back and look at a situation from a broader perspective. Inspirational leaders are unique, not afraid to be themselves and use this to their advantage to acquire followers and active participants in their journey.

In addition to these, other qualities identified by Arden University that every good leader possesses include decisiveness, trust, effective communication skills, empowerment of the team, and resilience. Leaders must be able to make tough decisions, build trust within their team, establish clear communication paths, empower their team through this trust and communication, and show resilience in the face of challenges.

Despite these qualities, it is important for leaders to balance these with the ‘zone of indifference’, a term coined by Wood referring to the range of tasks employees will do willingly without question. While having a large zone of indifference can indicate a good leader, if it is too large it may indicate organizational issues and potential overloading of the team.

There is an abundance of literature discussing leadership and its characteristics, different styles, models and types; thus, for those working in the tech industry, gaining leadership skills and experience as defined by various specialists may be beneficial. It could result in tech individuals being in high demand due to their combination of niche tech skills, abilities and leadership qualities.
