The inaugural Australian woman astronaut is scheduled to attend SXSW Sydney.

Katherine Bennell-Pegg, Australia’s most recent astronaut, is gearing up to share her remarkable journey with a global audience this October. Her upcoming appearance as a speaker at the renowned South by Southwest Sydney (SXSW Sydney) event marks another milestone in Bennell-Pegg’s trailblazing career.

The 39-year-old astronaut, who hails from the northern beaches of Sydney, has the distinction of being the first international candidate to complete astronaut training at the European Space Agency (ESA) in Germany. This unique achievement caught the attention of the Australian Space Agency (ASA), making her the country’s first astronaut to train under the Australian flag.

Reflecting on her path to space, Bennell-Pegg reminisced about her childhood dreams. “When I dreamed of becoming an astronaut as a child, I never thought it possible to do so representing Australia. It’s an honour to be graduating as an astronaut with the Australian flag on my shoulder,” she shared in an interview with ASA earlier this year.

However, Bennell-Pegg’s journey to the stars has been challenging. As highlighted by the ASA, an astronaut’s training includes intensive instruction and practical experiences in diverse fields. Bennell-Pegg had to undergo arduous survival and medical training while also learning about engineering, robotics and biotech.
In addition, she had to withstand intense G-forces, typical of space flights, by engaging in centrifuge training. It’s this all-round training that’s now made her eligible for future missions, including ones to the International Space Station (ISS).

SXSW Sydney’s 2023 iteration was a roaring success. This year, the event retains its reputation for attracting an impressive roster of intellectuals, innovators and leaders from varied fields like gaming, tech, music, cinema and culture. Bennell-Pegg will be joined by other outstanding personalities, including futurist Ryan Patel, Julie Inman Grant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, and Armand Ruiz, IBM’s Vice President of Product, AI Platform.

SXSW Sydney’s platform has continuously provided an enriching experience for its attendees, nourishing them with fresh insights, innovative solutions, and groundbreaking trends. This year’s edition will be no different, with Bennell-Pegg’s appearance undoubtedly adding substance to the event. The journey of Australia’s first female astronaut under the national flag will provide inspiration for many aspiring astronauts, showcasing that the galaxy is no limit for those who dare to dream.
