The open-source FLUX.1 from Black Forest Labs, a Flow Transformer armed with 12 billion parameters and capable of creating images from text descriptions has been launched.

Black Forest Labs has entered the field of generative artificial intelligence (AI), seeking to transform this sector with their advanced suite of models known as FLUX.1. The company’s primary focus is on pushing the boundaries of generative deep learning models for media, like images and videos, while also promoting the safe use of these revolutionary models.

FLUX.1 redefines text-to-image synthesis with unparalleled image detail, style diversity, scene complexity, and prompt adherence. It is available in three versions: FLUX.1 [pro], which is the most sophisticated and suitable for professional applications, FLUX.1 [dev], which is an open-weight model for non-commercial use, and FLUX.1 [schnell], a faster model for personal projects and local development.

The FLUX.1 models employ a unique hybrid architecture, integrating multimodal and parallel diffusion transformer blocks. These components enhance FLUX.1’s performance while allowing for unscaled hardware efficiency. Proving its superiority over other models, FLUX.1 has proven to outperform competitors such as Midjourney v6.0, DALL·E 3 (HD), and SD3-Ultra in different categories.

A distinguishing factor of FLUX.1 includes its ability to maintain the full spectrum of output diversity from pretraining, thereby providing considerably enhanced creative possibilities compared to the existing state of the art models. FLUX.1 has several unique features, such as premium output quality, latent adversarial diffusion distillation (available in FLUX.1[schnell]), and an Apache 2.0 license for broader usage possibilities.

In their determination to make the AI technologies accessible, Black Forest Labs have provided reference implementation and a sampling code for FLUX.1 [schnell] in a dedicated GitHub repository. This platform serves as a starting ground for developers and others interested in using this innovative model. Black Forest Labs have also streamlined the local setup process for easy integration into one’s local environment.

Despite its monumental advancements, FLUX.1 has its limitations. The model is not designed to provide factual information and can inadvertently amplify societal biases. Users must stick to strict ethical guidelines to prevent misuse. Despite these restrictions, Black Forest Labs maintains its mission to revolutionize the generative AI realm while educating the public about the safe use of advanced AI models.
