ChatGPT, which is possibly the most popular AI chatbot worldwide, was down recently, causing a wave of panic amongst enthusiasts who started fervently searching for alternatives. The reason for the outage was not disclosed by OpenAI, but it is back up and running now. With this incident, focus has been drawn to an issue many users encounter while using ChatGPT, i.e., “error in moderation.”
An “Error in Moderation” message is displayed by the chatbot when it is unable to deploy moderation in time. This usually results from a sudden surge in user queries or when a query is complicated and has been flagged. It is essential to note that all AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, go by pre-programmed content moderation rules pertaining to NSFW content like sex, violence, and gore. Therefore, when this error occurs, it signifies that the system could not respond to moderate the user’s query on time, or it might have flagged a query as inappropriate and hence, couldn’t respond to it.
If users come across the “error in moderation” message, fixing it is quite straightforward. The easiest way is to open a new chat window, and if that doesn’t work, users can log out of their account and log back in after a few minutes. In the event of these methods not being helpful, users can get in touch with the OpenAI team for resolution.
However, “error in moderation” is not the only issue users can face while using ChatGPT. Apart from this, three other commonly reported errors include “network error,” “error in body stream,” and “login error.” In most cases, these problems can be rectified by refreshing the page, clearing the cache on the browser, or restarting the device. If the error persists even after trying these methods, users can reach out to the OpenAI team for technical support.
